How to care for your merino wool garment

How to care for your merino wool garment

Care Instructions

Merino wool is more resilient than most people expect. With a little attention, your Wool&Prince garments will hold up for years.

General Care

Check the care label on your garment first — it's the most reliable guide for that specific fabric. Most of our garments are machine washable in cold water. Remove promptly, shake out, and air dry flat. We don't recommend machine drying, as heat can cause shrinkage and shorten the life of the fabric.

Woven Shirts

Merino's natural odor resistance means you can get significantly more wear between washes than you would with a cotton shirt.

  • Wash as infrequently as possible — spot clean when you can
  • Wear an undershirt to reduce buildup and extend time between washes
  • Hang to dry immediately after washing to minimize wrinkles
  • Limit shrinkage by avoiding heat during washing and drying
  • If you're hard on shirts, heavier fabrics like our 170gsm twill or 210gsm plain weave will hold up better over time

Knit Sweaters

  • Machine wash on gentle or hand wash in cold water
  • Reshape while damp and lay flat to dry
  • Some shrinkage (up to ~2.5cm) may occur but typically relaxes back after drying
  • Use a sweater brush or fabric shaver to manage lint and pilling over time

Cleaning Guidelines

Machine wash:

  • Check your machine's cold cycle temperature — cold cycles can run warm (75°F/24°C or above), which can degrade merino over time
  • Select a gentle cycle when possible
  • Use a mild detergent, standard or wool-specific
  • Remove promptly, shake out, and air dry

Hand wash:

  • Gently agitate in cool water with a small amount of detergent for a minute or two
    Rinse thoroughly
  • Don't wring — roll the garment in a towel and apply gentle pressure to remove excess water
  • Lay flat or hang to dry depending on the garment

Dry cleaning:

  • Request dry clean only — not laundered. Standard shirt laundering relies on heat, water, and stronger detergents that can be harsh on merino. True dry cleaning is significantly gentler.

Spot cleaning:

  • Treat promptly with water and a small amount of gentle soap
  • Rinse thoroughly — don't let product sit on the fabric

Avoid:

  • Bleach, fabric softeners, enzyme or peroxide-based detergents, and stain-removal pens and sprays (including OxiClean and Tide-to-Go)

Getting the Most Out of Your Garments

  • Hang in a well-ventilated space between wears
  • Wear deodorant rather than aluminum-based antiperspirant — it can cause staining and make odor difficult to remove. Use in moderation to prevent buildup.
  • Remove wrinkles by steaming, ironing on low heat, or hanging in a steamy bathroom
